This book is poorly written. It is choppy and cheesy. I’ll give it another ten pages before I toss it. Very disappointed! Not sure why people are giving it good reviews.

Update: I originally wrote the above review at page 85 and 1 star. I did read to page 100 out of obligation to my purchase. The book did pick up and the plot improved. I still do not think it should take 100 pages to hook a reader but I will admit I finished the book. The writing style still left choppy and some of the details continued to bother me. But the story did become interesting. I still do not recommend and I would not read it again.

Fatal Frost Defenders of Justice Nancy Mehl 9780764217777 Books Reviews

I usually enjoy Nancy Mehl's books, but what on earth happened here? Fatal Frost is supposed to be suspenseful, but it's downright boring. Everything is told, not shown. Mercy and the other characters don't engage in introspection or even action. Everything they do and think, and a lot of what they supposedly say, is summed up in text blocks. I guess Nancy was going for a "camera lens" sort of POV style, like what you'd get on the news. And she did have solid story bones. Considering our current climate and the prevalence of heroin, as well as the prevalence of violence against law enforcement, Fatal Frost could've been a great book. Unfortunately, the boring writing makes it dead on arrival. Try again, Nancy--in the meantime, I'll revisit your other books.
I enjoyed this book tremendously ,it kept me reading, finding out one has been betrayed by those you trusted hit hard and the plot kept me turning pages. The stark reality of the destruction drugs cause and the thugs who manipulate society made my blood boil. Seeing people finding God in these tough situations made me once again so grateful I am a child of His ,His love reaches past our pasts ,our pain and our failures and calls us into freedom and healing. Thank you for an exciting read.
Fatal Frost is a thrilling narrative mixing loyal officers betrayed by weak or greedy people, street gangs working with vicious drug cartels in St. Louis with Los Angeles connections, injuries exacerbated by a severe snow and ice storm, and a missing piece of vital evidence. I like the contemporary references to communications and situations.
I especially appreciate U.S. Deputy Marshal Mercy Brennan, an imperfect heroine who grows and changes during the novel. Many can relate to her changing relationship to God. These characters are so realistic that I had to remind myself that this is fiction, not a news story.
Fasten your seatbelts before reading this excellent first book in Nancy Mehl’s Defenders of Justice series, and then look forward to more books which follow.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Fatal Frost, and recommend it highly.
I received a complimentary copy of Fatal Frost and was under no obligation to post a review.
I started reading Fatal Frost by Nancy Mehl on my iPhone while I waited for a friend to finish shopping, and I really wanted the friend to keep shopping! The story grabs you by the throat and holds on to the end.

Mercy Brennan was the “frost” in the story, a woman so hurt by events in her past that she couldn’t relate to anyone except a friend she grew up with who knew her story. Watching her grow was very rewarding. And Mark St. Laurent can save me anytime! He was the perfect hero. And the tension…let’s just say I didn’t get to sleep until after midnight last night because I couldn’t put the book down.

Looking forward to the next book in the series
Pleasently surprised that this was a faith based action story about US Marshalls and police trying to stop a drug lord. For those that are not overly religious, no one walks around spouting direct scripture from the Bible and the dialogue about God seemed natural. And because of its religious nature no sex scenes (or weirdly mis-timed naughty talk where bullets are flying and yet the characters are thinking about humping one another, which happen in a book I read not too long ago / )

Where the book could have been better was the action and sequence of events. Agree with a few folks that you have to stretch reality a bit when it came to injuries and it seemed like they were constantly being ambushed or caught off-guard. I would like to think that an operation such as this would have been better planned and folks a bit more savvy, otherwise the witness protection program is in serious trouble.

Nevertheless, while the book was not gold, it was enjoyable and I would read another from this author. 3.5 rounded up.
In her newest series, Defenders of Justice, readers are introduced to a U. S. Marshal character named Mercy Brennan. Mercy’s coworkers give her a nickname that implies how well guarded Mercy keeps her heart and life. As readers progress through the book, it is revealed why Mercy protects herself from what she believes will end up hurting or breaking her heart. Mercy has few friends from within the service and from other agencies, but with danger rapidly closing in on her life Mercy may have to face her past head on!
In a tale of danger, suspense and unending battles, the flavor of a great suspenseful tale is revealed. The author does more than simply write a good book; she draws her audience into the adventure of the story and keeps them engaged as the plot unfolds. At times, when I least expected, Nancy Mehl would bring a sudden change into the tale that would ramp up my heartbeat!
Nancy Mehl has written many books in her career and I have enjoyed reading her novels. Now, in her Defenders series, I was even more engrossed in the plot, the lives of her characters and the suspense that didn’t let up till the very end. Personally, I cannot wait until the next story of the series comes out so I can see where Mercy is as well as some of the supporting cast. Keep up the great storytelling Nancy!
