I first read this book about a year ago. It was the start of a love affair with Mr Charles Martin's books. One after the other, I read all of his books. I pre ordered his latest novel...Long Way Gone months before it was due. I read that one 2.5 times. Each re-read gives me the chance to rate it again. Yes I do have my favorites...Long Way Gone...Water From My Heart...When Crickets Cry..Where the River Ends...Chasing Fireflies and Thunder and Rain are all my # 1 favorites. I simply can't decide. So l leave it to you to. You walk the journey with his people. You'll cry for sure. There is lots of pain to be ensured, redemption to be found and joy to be shared. When you get to the end of his story, you'll whisper softly.......thank you, for the journey. It was worth the read. Mr Charles Martin does not disappoint. God bless you Mr Martin and for the good deeds you do in Nicaragua.

"Where a River Ends" is not simply a great book it is one of my favorite titles by Charles Martin. If you haven't had the pleasure of reading one of Martins books, this is as good a place to start. The only better book I feel that Martin has written is " When Crickets Cry" so while you can't go wrong with this book I would suggest starting there.

Irrespective of which book you start with you will end up reading all of Charles Martins books. They are simply that good. "Where a River Ends" is a heartbreaking love story that takes place in a canoe on a river that borders Georgia and Florida. The main characters are a river guide/artist and an intelligent well bread Charleston woman.

This book, as with all of Martins titles, has a great story line, fascinating characters and descriptions of a wild and beautiful landscape. But best of all is the writing. Martin takes a complex novel and presents it the simplest and sweetest language. It is this more than anything that sets his books apart from most mainstream southern authors.
This book took me a couple of chapters to really get into the story line, but once I did, I was not able to put it down. It is beautifully written, painted really, with the stroke of a multi-colored pen. It truly was a work of art, crafted brilliantly with powerful prose, filled with raw emotion. Doss, the under-privileged, talented young painter and the beautiful, model, Abigail, Charleston royalty begin their love story and take us on their journey through great triumph of overcoming the deep pits of a dehabilitating battle with an aggressive form of cancer. This is the journey of their love for one another and their quest to discover all they can about self and one another. I highly recommend this book to anyone who had known love, painting and who loves the river!
A beautifully written "life journey". Mr. Martin is a master story teller. His character development has you feeling like you are part of the family.
After reading the final pages with a tear soaked face, I went to my and bought another of his books. He's got a fan for life.
I've read several Charles Martin books, this one had me in a love hate relationship, I went back and forth so many times but mostly loved it. The characters were so great I could see them all & loved Allie and Doss,Bob was another great character.The parts I didn't like we're those that were painful to read, but you can't have a good book without the sorrow because it wouldn't be real. This was a wonderful,powerful, book, I cried & laughed and every other emotion was experienced. I didn't know how it could end well but it was a beautiful ending. Thank you again Mr. MARTIN for another great book.
As with most if not all of Charles Martin's books, his characters become such a part of the readers" hearts that it hurts to let them go. They are as much alive as we as they love, hurt, redeem, teach and rebalance their existence as the storms of life threaten to destroy. This book is profound because only a book with such depth, sensitivity and essence could teach us how to truly love and how to truly hurt. Soulful! I need to begin another of his books immediately in order to regain my emotional equilibrium. God bless you, Mr. Martin.
This is the third book I've ready by Charles Martin. While I wouldn't rate it as my favorite, it is still very well-written and emotionally gripping. I can't imagine what it's like to fight a raging disease that takes over every aspect of your life and marriage. But this book gives beautiful insight to the life of a caregiver. Doss is dedicated to his wife, Abbie, and her needs. But Doss is also human and humans are prone to err, as proven by his dinner "date" while still married to his wife. No, a secret affair never blossoms, but it does show that even caregivers need a sense of connection. Caregivers (and patients!) miss the affection, sex, physical and emotional aspects that we associate with dating and marriage.

It's a beautiful story and I'm sure you'll find it enlightening as well as thought-provoking.
