If you've imagined being a Producer or a Writer. . .an Actor or a Director. . .or a real estate investor, hedge fund dude, or even a world champion poker player. . .you can do it, as long as you have the right directions. And I'd like to share those directions with you. . .the directions that took me years to gather, but the directions that are without a doubt responsible for getting me where I am today. . .and more importantly, will be 101% responsible for where I want to be tomorrow. And I know that they can do the same for you.

You know how sometimes you maybe be feeling a little stuck or indifferent and you just need a friend to encourage you and let you know that life's not as bad as it may seem and that you CAN do it because you have what it takes? Yeah. That's what this book is. It's the simplicity that makes it most attractive. I read this in one sitting, and it was a fairly easy read. So on that end, even if you're not a "reader," you'll be fine. Don't let that be a deterrent. But back to the simplicity...Ken doesn't necessarily present this super magic hidden answer in 'How to Succeed in the Arts...or in Anything.' It's straightforward, manageable, and to-the-point. I call it a book of permissions because the book is supremely littered with licensing for forward motion, and that licensing is practical. I call it a book of reminders because -- in my case at least -- the author discusses a myriad of things that somewhere deep down, you and I already know. Sometimes you run into books like this one and the book highlights what you need to change about your life. While this one does that, it does it with the perfect amount of encouragement. I could go on, but what will benefit you most is actually reading the book which I highly recommend this book. Everyone from the Just Starting-er to the Been Here Done That-er can pull something from this book...even if it's a bit of encouragement. Remember that best friend that I mentioned earlier? It feels like Ken's sitting right there telling you "Hey...you're brilliant. You know that? And I know you can do it." That said, I'm gonna make this something that I read at least 2x a year. Maybe more. Just because it's good for the heart to know that someone's on your side.Product details

How to Succeed in the ArtsOr in Anything Ken Davenport 9781365624209 Books Reviews
Ken writes like a gunslinger - straight from the hip, shooting words right at you - his message if you want something to happen, do something about it - anything! - and even a small action is okay - just start somewhere! - for him, excuses are like prisoners - he takes none! - his advice gets right to the point, short and sweet, in vernacular artists - and really anybody! - can understand - he's motivated me into taking the first step to producing my play, 'The Glimmer' - which is to secure a legal document to sell percentages of my copyright - and no, I haven't achieved it, yet - but I'm working on it! - and then all the other steps should fall into line for this production - it will take effort, yes - but that's the idea! - so don't "hold up" in purchasing this book - it could be a game changer for you...
Calling all people who want to succeed...this book must be next on your list! I've read a lot of books on "winning" at life and this is one I am going to keep under my pillow to learn by "earsmosis!" It is so short and sweet, so clear, so to the point and so simple that it has to rate up there with Think and Grow Rich and others of it's kind. I love how it gives you an easy 3-step action plan for success and when you read them, you know you're not getting another degree in B.S. And then Ken also gives you ideas to get unstuck. So when you get stuck...you won't get stuck. This is a winner winner chicken dinner. You won't need the steak. Diane Uniman aka Princess Diane Von Brainisfried
We all need someone to tell us to GET OFF THE FENCE. No matter what your goal, Ken Davenport explains how to stop thinking about it and how to DO IT in plain, simple, easy-to-understand language. He's not going to do it for you -- no one can do that but you. But he sure can inspire you to JUST DO IT, like the old Nike ad. I have no trouble doing my job -- it's my passion. But I play an instrument and I talk myself out of practicing. Not since I read Ken's book. He has an answer for every single one of my excuses. This is also a GREAT GIFT for all those people in your life who have an idea (and who doesn't?). So JUST BUY IT and if you read it, you will be sure to take action!
I got this book because I subscribe to the Producer's Perspective Blog, which I always go out of my way to read. If you don't follow it and are interested in theater, then you definitely need to check it out!
Like in his blog, Ken's enthusiasm for creating art and especially theater jumps off every page of this quick, inspiring book. It would take a pretty jaded and cynical person not to find it contagious and get swept up in it.
I knew I would love this book from pretty much the beginning when Ken relates how he started producing theater with a piece of advice from Hal Prince. Hal Prince told him not to worry about producing the next WEST SIDE STORY, but to just get out there and do something. This advice really hit home with me. Before I even finished the book I decided to self-produce one of my short plays at a short play festival in Austin, Texas.
To sum up, this book will give you the pep talk and confidence you need to get up, go out, and do that thing you've always wanted to do, but been to scared or shy to make theater!
This is a fine book for anyone struggling with finding a formula toward achieving one's goals. While the book is short, Ken Davenport drives home repeatedly the importance of his lessons, and more importantly, why he cares about them so much. He drives his points home with anecdotes, logical/scientific reasoning and laws, and comparisons and contrasts with other professions and nonprofessional actions. At first glance, it may be tedious to read through over a hundred pages of a person saying the same thing over and over. However, as I persevered in reading, I found more and more layers of information with each new chapter, answers to questions previously posed. He has set ups and payoffs, and demonstrates how important repetition is for retention. For anyone who is looking for "a person in the arena" as Dr. Brene Brown refers to in her book, Daring Greatly, Ken shows himself as a good example. He understands the work that is necessary to achieve success, and even harder, to triumph despite failure and lack of motivation. I am grateful to have read this book. It has given me quite a bit to not only think about but to strategize and put into action with my various plans and goals. Thank you.
