The Vampire Diaries The Return Nightfall L J Smith Books
Reading this book for the 5th maybe 6th and I still feel the same way.... I loved reading from Damon's POV he is just so funny and the way his mind works to solve a problem well it is unlike anything I have read. Each time I read this book I am infuriated by the way that Elena is so single minded in her love for Stefan, its like she can't do anything other than love him, like she has to love him no matter what. Damon knew what he was saying when he was trying to explain to her why they are better suited to be together:
“But Elena,” Damon’s voice had life now; it was both excited and inflexible: “Can’t you see? Past history aside, you have to admit that we’re the ones that belong together. You and I are simply better suited to each other by nature. Deep down you know that, because we understand each other. We’re on the same intellectual level—”
Sometimes I feel as though Damon is the only one who actually uses his mind.
A fellow reader made a good point in another review where she stated that Elena needs someone to love and show her love and that is what Stefan did for her. She then needed to do that for Damon but she keeps resisting him... Just being too damn stubborn!!!

The Vampire Diaries The Return Nightfall L J Smith Books Reviews
I loved all of L.J. Smith's books as a teenager, and even though this book had a poor review, I went ahead and got it. I agree that it has too much stuff going on. I also was disappointed that the book is set in 1992 and suddenly everyone has cell phones with video and digital cameras and personal computers. I can't believe that she would make that kind of mistake... The characters have also changed a lot from the original series, for the worse. Worse yet - these crazy WINGS of blah blah blah... weird...
The Kitsune twins kind of remind me of The Forbidden Game series - I agree they would have been better in a different series, but I didn't really like them anyway...
But it was nice to have something new from her, and hopefully they have more time to edit the next in the series. Hopefully she gets back to writing the way she has in the past, because she was one of my favorite authors of all time...
When I finished reading I was out of breath. Scenes of gratuitous gore reminded me of why I don't watch horror films. Smith's first four books in the Vampire Diaries (which are placed into two jackets) give us an Elena growing away from her Queen Bee status. She still has the spark in Nightfall, but we hear little from her. I missed her.
Hiding Stefan for three-quarters of the story made me miss him too. Damon, I agree with others would not have done a massage on Elena. Possibly after she'd covered him with the Wings of Redemption and he'd been able to face his demons of the past (which by the way I feel was well played), but he wouldn't have massaged her before.
The demonic creatures of the Malach and the use of several languages added connections to the stories Italian and Japanese evil creatures. However, as I mentioned I don't like walking away from a book afraid to turn my light off.
In relation to suspension of disbelief, LJ Smith had me, the characters are growing, Matt is a knight, Bonnie is wiser, Meredith is stronger. However, the book also, for me, walks away from the YA level into full adult because of my above comments about horror and gore.
I've enjoyed reading all the prior books and I watch the TV series. I almost stopped reading the book only after a few pages. The writing is awful. When reading paranormal you expect the outrageous but everything in this book seems ridiculous and stupid. The writing couldn't pull together to ridiculous and stupid to make it plausible. It makes me believe the writer who wrote the series before is not the same writer now. The story line is all over the place and reads like someone high on drugs wrote it in a drug haze. I wonder what editor in their right mind would release this book with out a firm editing hand. I continue to read only because I want to know how it will end but it is taking a long time as I read other books in between. Yes, Elena can do no wrong and it is absurd. Thankfully as others mentioned Damon is the only character and maybe Matt who make sense. Sadly there are so many other and new characters in this book that don't make sense it's scary.
She's back, Elena's back from the dead after helping save the world in the last book from the spirit realm. Things have changed and nobody knows that Elena's back besides her inner circle of friends. Caroline's not handling it too well though. (She's nothing like the show's Caroline).
Stefan's trying to protect Elena and Damon wants to do the same, but he's able to be taken over by this new evil that has come to Mystic Falls. Meredith, Bonnie, Matt, Elena and even Mrs. Flowers have to work together to stop what is happening and is to come.
The girls in town are starting to change ever since the foxes came to town. Stefan goes missing and it is Damon's fault even though he is having hard time remembering what he is doing being possessed and all.
Nightfall ends with Elena, Matt and Damon leaving town to find Stefan. Elena saved Damon, but at what cost? U will have to read and find out.
I thought that this book could have done better yes because it was really hard to read this book and did take longer than the first four to read. I am not sure if this was before or after L.J. Smith was fired from Alloy/Harper books and a ghost writer took over, but that could be it on the failing parts of this book. I am not sure if i will re-read but I will encourage others to give it a chance because it does have some great parts.
